Taken by the Nazis from a synagogue in Czechoslovakia (where it had been since 1870), the Torah featured in this sculpture is itself a Holocaust survivor. Artist Corinne Soikin Strauss, who was commissioned by Mr Berkowicz and Ms Srolovitz to create the Torah mantle, painted the silk covering with biblical flowers, representing hope and regrowth. These flowers blooming with color, symbolize the continuation of beauthy and life.
Ironically, the flowers from behind a wire mesh wrapping, which was designed by sculptor Nancy Koenigsberg, and is reminiscent of the barbed wire that encircled the concentration camps. A black ribbon on the bottom of the Torah mantle and the black rings on top are signs of mourning.
The cherished scroll is suspended in front of the Holocaust photographs and appears as if it is being pushed towards you by the photographs behind it. This is an indication that the responsibility of caring for the Torah – and for all the Holocaust remembrances – has been passed along. It’s now your turn to carry these memories forward, making sure they are never forgotten.
