Design

The design process is a collaboration between the artist and the Synagogue. The concept drawing is painted in watercolor after receiving photos of the sanctuary or visiting it in person. These renderings can be used on display at the Synagogue to encourage donations for the project.

Sometimes meeting with the Rabbi or a representative of the aesthetic committee is necessary to understand the scope and spirit of the project. Tapestry weight silk and trim are selected from a variety of patterns and weaves.

Each piece is hand painted by Corinne and her associate of 10 years, Clare Schoenheimer, an exhibiting artist in her own right, in her light filled studio in East Hampton, New York. The fabric is steam set for color permanence. The covers are constructed carefully with wooden rings on top for stability and long wear and conservation.

Corinne Soikin Strauss, an award-winning painter who studied Fine Arts at New York's Music and Art High School, Pratt Institute and The Art Student's League has a long-standing love of nature and the exploration of spiritual symbolism. She creates extraordinary paintings on silk for couples (visit our sister site at www.chuppah.com), and has been commissioned by collectors, Synagogues and Museums throughout the country.

She has been interviewed on ABC Eye Witness News, featured in The New York Times, Bride's Magazine, Modern Bride and Time/Out New York, as well as Jewish Week, Moment, Haddassah.
